The “32 in 32” series has begun at the Official NHL site, so it must be August and we must be inching forward in the offseason. With a shorter preseason and training camp — but 84 games now…yay?! — the summer will have an even longer slow window.

Still, some Islanders (and ex-Islanders) bits from the past week follow, plus a curious long-term bet in Pittsburgh.

  • The Islanders have poached a new assistant GM/head of their AHL affiliate, grabbing Gold from the Bruins organization. Chris Lamoriello remains in the front office but is no longer GM of the AHL team. [Isles | Newsday | Post]

Islanders grade: D. While there’s plenty to like about this roster construction, it’s hard not to look at this quiet summer and feel like it’s a missed opportunity — especially while Schaefer remains on his rookie deal.
