We’ve all taken the gamble. You grab food in the drive-through of your favorite fast food spot and try to eat it in the car because you’re starving. Maybe the sauces from your burger end up hitting your pants because you can’t make eye contact with what you’re eating. Maybe the food hits the floor when you need to try to put it down to make a left turn. And don’t even dare try eating those French fries with ketchup.
TikTok user @iamcilllla drew some attention on that app for showing off her neat little trick for solving the fast-food driving problem. In her video, iamcilllla munches on Chick-Fil-A nuggets while riding through traffic with no hands on the wheel. The car whirs along without her help, as she chows down on her lunch.
So how did iamcilllla actually do that?
(Spoiler alert: You should not do this.)
‘Passenger Princess’ Behind the Wheel
A title on the video reads, “Passenger Princess even in the driver’s seat.” Passenger Princess is a term popularized on TikTok that connotes a woman carrying about her business languidly as a male driver chauffeurs her around.
While Tesla technically allows ladies to be a passenger princess in the driver’s seat, it’s complicated.
Simply put, Tesla’s self-driving mode may not always work as smoothly as it appears in the 9-second video iamcilllla posted. Tesla calls their product Full Self-Driving (FSD) and they bill it as a driver-assist feature that can handle lane changes and navigation. It can even react to traffic signs.
But those blown away by the TikTok should also be aware that the system is not exactly fully autonomous. Drivers still need to stay sharp and keep an eye on the road. For that reason, it’s challenging to actually eat in peace as iamcilllla did because certain movements will trigger an alarm in the Tesla. Tesla will give you a “strike” for not paying attention, and strikes can actually result in a suspension of the driver’s autopilot privileges.
Tesla drivers mentioned that detail in the comments of iamcilllla’s TikTok, suggesting they or people they knew hadn’t been as lucky.
“We don’t have the same FSD. God forbid I look out my side mirror for more than 3 seconds, but yours lets you eat?!” woods.water wrote.
One TikToker said Tesla suspended her niece for trying what iamcilllla did.
“Do you have to have your hands on the wheel? Because my niece got her FSD suspended for a month for taking her hands off the wheel lol,” @motherhustler187 wrote.
Another apparent Tesla driver suggested wearing sunglasses to trick the FSD into giving you more space.
“Can’t even look to the right without it alerting you to pay attention,” @famfunfamily wrote with four laugh cry emojis. “Wear sunglasses and it’s much better.
Motor1 reached out to iamcilllla over TikTok’s direct messaging service to find out if she had averted getting a strike but didn’t immediately receive a response.
