Thomas Carty’s team have issued a statement after the bizarre ending to his fight with Dave Allen on Saturday.

On the undercard of Katie Taylor’s retirement at Dublin’s famous Croke Park, the Irish icon’s compatriot Carty boxed Allen in a heavyweight fight.

The action ended abruptly in round one, however, when Carty fell through the ropes and onto the floor outside the ring.

After a few minutes of confusion, while Carty received oxygen and Allen appeared bemused, the bout was declared a no-contest. Carty, 30, was escorted away from the ring on his feet.

And on Sunday, his team issued a statement that read: “After just one minute and 30 seconds of Round 1 Thomas Carty had received 2 illegal blows to the back of his head in last night’s contest at Croke Park on the Katie Taylor undercard.

“The second blow [caused] Thomas a momentary lapse forcing Thomas to reach for the ropes to regain his balance and the loose ropes gave way propelling Thomas head first out of the ring causing him to strike his head on a ringside table.

“In turn this caused Thomas a suspected concussion and unfortunately an end to this fight on instructions from the ringside doctor.

“After spending time at the hospital and receiving a brain scan Thomas is now at home recovering and more importantly healthy.”

A replay did seem to show Allen striking Carty on the back of the head in a clinch, right before Carty tumbled through the ropes.

Allen, 34, wrote on Instagram on Sunday: “I’ve had some bizarre moments in my career but this might top it, hope @_thomascarty is healthy and well and Dublin has a kfc.

Allen also addressed the ending of the fight on his Instagram story, while replying to various questions.

When asked if he was “p***ed off” at how the bout ended, Allen said: “Yes I’m annoyed, I felt good landed a jab and nice double left hook more success in [the] first minute than I’ve ever had before was very confident it wa [sic] getting one way and very quickly.”

Allen also claimed: “I threw a legal punch he turned the back of his head into, the rest is up to peoples [sic] own interpretation what’s happened.

Later, when asked whether he had spoken to Carty since the fight, Allen added: “Just spoke to him on the phone now, he’s a good fella it’s boxing I’m not gonna hold a grudge or have bad feeling over a match, it’s a shame but have to move on from it.”
