Mojang is giving Minecraft players the option to improve the graphics with a new setting called Vibrant Visuals that affects directional lighting, volumetric fog, and other lighting aspects in the game. Players will be able to turn it on and off as they please.

What is Vibrant Visuals in Minecraft?

Vibrant Visuals is a new setting in Minecraft that enhances lighting and shadow on every aspect of the game. Not only will it affect every biome and the Overworld as a whole, but also some mobs and even the deep dark.

“Improvements, including volumetric lighting, mean you’ll be able to watch the sun’s rays carve across the Overworld, and every block will cast its own shadow,” Mojang said in a blog post. Spider’s and Enderman’s eyes will glow in the dark, light will shine through the windows, the water and metallic blocks will have reflections, and the sunlight will reach underwater.

Not only the lighting will be more complex in the world, but the shadows will bring more depth to your surroundings. Each item will cast a unique shadow that aligns with the grids and pixels, following the position of the sun.

Vibrant Visuals is basically a built-in shader. It won’t change any textures or impact gameplay mechanics such as crop growth or how mobs burn in the sun. Currently, you can install community-made shader packs that can do similar or very close to the Vibrant Visuals setting.

It’s also backwards compatible with all your worlds and works locally, which means players on multiplayer can play together even if one has Vibrant Visuals on. It’s possible not all computers will be able to run smoothly with it enabled, but that won’t stop friends from playing together.

Players remembered the Super Duper Graphics Pack that was announced in 2017 but was canceled in 2019 due to performance issues. It seems Mojang is making another attempt at it, but with a less ambitious visual upgrade with Vibrant Visuals. Instead of including animations and textures in the visual upgrade, it will only improve lighting and shadow.

How to enable Vibrant Visuals in Minecraft

To enable Vibrant Visuals in Minecraft, you just have turn it on in the Video settings. However, not all players will be able to test it out right from the start. Mojang will make the early versions of Vibrant Visuals available in the next months on select Bedrock Edition devices “via preview and/or beta.”

There is no confirmed date of when the setting will reach Bedrock Edition. It’s also planned to be included in Java Edition “either fully or partially” after some time. “Now we’re actively working on Vibrant Visuals for Minecraft: Java Edition and our goal is to bring it to the game in a way that serves not only our players, but also our modders and resource pack creators,” Mojang said.
