The final round of the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink is set up for chaos Sunday afternoon, with Alex Smalley holding a two-shot lead but more than 20 players realistically still in contention entering the final 18 holes.

Smalley sits at 6-under after a third-round 68, but Reuters noted the leaderboard is unusually crowded for a major championship, with 43 players within five shots of the lead heading into Sunday. Smalley birdied six of his final 14 holes Saturday to grab control, yet he is still chasing the biggest win of his career against one of the deepest leaderboards of the season.

The biggest names remain firmly in the hunt. Rory McIlroy charged back into contention with a 66 on Saturday and starts Sunday only three shots back as he looks for a second straight major title after winning the Masters earlier this spring. Jon Rahm, Ludvig Åberg, Aaron Rai, Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Reed are also within striking distance entering the final round.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is still lurking despite an uneven third round. Scheffler called it “anybody’s tournament” after struggling on the greens Saturday, and several analysts expect the softer Sunday setup at Aronimink to create plenty of birdie chances and leaderboard movement throughout the afternoon.

One major storyline on Sunday will be whether Smalley can handle the pressure of leading a major for the first time. The 29-year-old has never won on the PGA Tour, but he responded impressively on Saturday after an early stumble by birdieing three of his final four holes to keep the outright lead. With McIlroy, Rahm, Scheffler, and Schauffele all chasing from behind, the final round has the feel of a major championship shootout rather than a runaway finish.
