49ers legend Joe Montana is in support of current San Francisco star Brock Purdy’s lucrative five-year, $265M contract extension.

In an exclusive interview with Bay Area News Group’s Cam Inman, Montana detailed why he believes Purdy’s new deal is deserved.

“Yeah, well, they have to. I mean, it’s not like he hasn’t done the job,” Montana told Inman (h/t 49ers Webzone’s David Bonilla). “He’s been fairly consistent. He had a lot of injuries. Those are all tough to deal with.”

Consistent is the perfect word to describe Purdy.

Over two and a half seasons as the 49ers’ full-time starter, the 25-year-old has virtually provided the same production and leadership, whether San Francisco is contending or tumbling.

Purdy has thrown 64 touchdown passes and 9,518 passing yards, and only appears to be getting better as he ages. That fact, in particular, makes Montana a real fan.

“He plays within himself,” Montana told Inman about Purdy. “Usually, you see in the second year — which he didn’t really do much — is try so much to be better and, ‘Oh, I can do this now.’ You see a lot of that from the first-year wonders, and you think, what are they going to do next year, and they think they can do everything.

“He played within himself and did what he’s supposed to.”

Purdy threw for 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions during the 2024 NFL season despite several of his key targets being injured for extended periods. When his big-time teammates were healthy in 2023, Purdy collected 31 touchdown passes, 4,280 passing yards and a Super Bowl LVIII berth.

Montana has good reason to believe that Purdy is worth his massive contract extension. All it takes is a Vince Lombardi Trophy coming back to the Bay to make it fact.

“You can look over anybody’s teams, even our years, it didn’t matter. We all had ups and downs,” Montana said about the retooling 49ers. “It’s just about coming back from where they are.”

Purdy and the aging 49ers have a big 2025 season ahead.
