Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The hosts started the game brightly and were rewarded with the first chance in the 10th minute when Wesley Fofana got onto Reece James’ cross from a corner, but the Frenchman headed wide.

Moments later, Malo Gusto found Cole Palmer inside the area, but his curling strike went just wide before James riffled his effort well over.

In the 17th minute, Enzo Fernandez thought he had given Chelsea the lead with a powerful strike, but his goal-bound effort was blocked by Palmer.

However, two minutes later, Anthony Gordon gave the Magpies the lead after he tucked home Joe Willock’s pass.

Minutes later, Malick Thiaw could’ve doubled the visitors’ advantage after he got onto a free kick, but he sent his header wide.

At the other end, Palmer could’ve restored parity for the Blues, but his curling effort was parried away by Aaron Ramsdale before James sent his free kick just wide.

Just before the break, Jacob Ramsey almost got Newcastle’s second, but his deflected strike was clawed away by Robert Sanchez.

Four minutes after the break, Liam Delap almost made an instant impact off the bench as he tried his luck from range, but his effort was parried away by Ramsdale.

Both sides failed to create any other chances until the 70th minute when Gordon was found at the edge of the area, but Sanchez denied him.

At the other end, the hosts could’ve drawn level after James sent in an inviting cross to the back post and Marc Cucurella squared it across to Delap, but he sent his effort well over the bar from 10 yards out before Trevoh Chalobah sent his glancing header wide.

Moments later, James almost picked out the bottom corner from a free kick, but he was denied by the base of the post.

Deep into stoppage time, Joao Pedro could’ve restored parity for Chelsea at the death after he met Palmer’s cross, but his header looped over the bar.

Chelsea have endured another setback in their fight for a Champions League spot with eight games still to come.
