Former RKC Waalwijk man Meulensteen left Vitesse a year ago, after their relegation from the Eredivisie. He signed a three-year contract with Sampdoria in Serie A but leaves after just one year. Sampdoria failed to get promoted back out of the second tier and had a disappointing season.
At De Adelaarshorst, Meulensteen may play in two positions. In recent years at Vitesse and Sampdoria, the son of Rene primarily played as a holding midfielder. This makes him the likely replacement for Enric Llansana, who moved to Anderlecht. Meulensteen can also play as a central defender.
Meulensteen will become Go Ahead’s third new signing of the summer. The club previously acquired Richonell Margaret from RKC Waalwijk and the talented Yassir Salah Rahmouni from De Graafschap. On the other hand, Oliver Antman is expected to leave, moving to Rangers.
