For the first time since 2016, George Kambosos (21-3) will be fighting in his hometown of Sydney when he takes on Daud Yordan (43-4) at Qudos Bank Arena on Saturday, March 22.

The 31-year-old meets Indonesia’s “Boxing Senator” in his maiden bout at super lightweight, having previously conquered the 135-pound division when upsetting Teofimo Lopez back in 2021.

While Kambosos has since lost twice to Devin Haney and once to Vasiliy Lomachenko, he’s confident he can once again challenge for world title honours.

A win over former world title challenger Yordan, 37, could open the door for more big fights, with WBO champion Lopez, and IBF titleholder Richardson Hitchins, two opponents the Aussie would love to face.

That pair have been in talks for a unification fight, with boxing’s new sugar daddy, Turki Alalshikh, keen to get it made.

“We focus on Yordan, I know he’s coming here to spoil the party, but we know how important this fight is for me to look to those future fights,” Kambosos told Sporting News.

“Me and Hitchins have bad blood, we hate each other, we’re always going back and forth with the verbal abuse on social media so of course I’ve said yes

“We focus on March, get that done and then we can fight the next day.

“Again, my best buddy, Teofimo Lopez, if he was to walk here in Sydney we’d go toe-to-toe right now. That can happen as well. I never shy away from the hard challenges.

“I’m very confident [I can compete for world titles] because my only losses have been to Devin Haney, who’s one of the all-time greats and Vasiliy Lomachenko, another all-time great, so I’m very confident.”

Kambosos headlines a card which also features two women’s world title fights, with Skye Nicolson defending her WBC featherweight strap against Tiara Brown, and WBA bantamweight queen Cherneka Johnson rematching Nina Hughes.

Last time Kambosos was in action in Sydney, he was a 10-0 prospect fighting for a regional belt at Luna Park.

His career since has taken him to Kuala Lumpur, Las Vegas, Athens, New York, London and more.

With a passionate Greek community in Sydney, Kambosos is expecting big things from the homecoming show.

“I never had the chance to come back to Sydney,” Kambosos said.

“Obviously, Melbourne took the big fights with Haney, Perth took the big fight with Lomachenko.

“I was always focussed to bring back a big fight to Sydney and here we are, eight years later, March 22, Qudos Bank Arena.

“Yordan is no joke. He will not come here to be embarrassed.

“He comes to fight, he’s a slugger. I’m looking forward to it, this is a good test, a good 140-pound entry and I want to make a big statement against this guy and I can’t wait.”
