After the 120th minute, Gian Piero Gasperini commented on the team’s performance and elimination to Sky Sport.
“It was certainly a thrilling match, and we come away from it with great disappointment. We saw the best and the worst of what we could do. The best because we played a comeback game and achieved important things against a strong team like Bologna. It’s a shame we made certain mistakes. Mancini also made a mistake for the first goal, when he went down after being held. It was quite an unusual situation, but these mistakes cost us goals.”
Gasperini then spoke about how the defensive focus has changed: “The level is rising, as are the fatigue and pressure. We did a lot of good things and pulled three goals back; the momentum of the game seemed in our favor. But when you make mistakes like that, you lose…”
And on the limited attacking options: “During extra time, we were a bit tired, especially in defense, but we couldn’t make any substitutions. If you’re missing four or five players in the same position, it’s clear you struggle. We found an extraordinary Malen; he increased the threat in attack. But in the first half of the season, we had more options and were able to get results. Since the start of the year, we’ve had problems in attack. I had the hope and dream of repeating certain offensive performances, but due to injuries or because we weren’t able to acquire players with certain characteristics, it was more difficult. But the players have always been extraordinary.”
