Gary Player has taken to social media to congratulate Wyndham Clark following his victory at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills this past week.
Clark secured his second major championship in New York this past week. It appeared that he had put himself in position to coast across the line as he opened up a commanding lead with 18 holes to play.

Even with a bogey on his final hole on Saturday, Clark led by six. It was hard to see how anyone could stop him winning without some help from the 32-year-old himself.
Clark certainly did wobble on Sunday at Shinnecock. He was three over par for the day at the turn, and failed to shake Sam Burns off for the majority of the round.

Ultimately, Burns missed crucial putts on 17 and 18. And when Clark rolled in a superb birdie on the 16th, it appeared the contest was largely over.
Indeed, Clark made the two-putt that he needed on the last to confirm his victory. Interestingly, there was hardly any of the euphoria that often comes with a winning moment in a major, with Clark far from a favourite with the crowds.

Nevertheless, Gary Player – who won the US Open in 1965 – was full of praise for Clark’s display.

He wrote on X: ‘Many congratulations to Wyndham Clark on a superb, wire to wire US Open victory at Shinnecock. There are few accomplishments in golf that compare to winning your country’s National Championship and this course demands every aspect of a player’s game. It was a reminder that behind every champion is a journey filled with sacrifice, support and belief. Well done, Wyndham. GP‘.
The mistake Wyndham Clark made after his 2023 US Open win he must now avoid
Clark certainly made a number of mistakes following his victory at LACC in 2023. His rise was somewhat out of the blue, and he went on to make his Ryder Cup debut at Marco Simone.
It was almost as though he had assumed that all of the hard work was done. He was a major champion and one of the best players in the world at the time.

However, Clark was not able to kick on. He won once on the PGA Tour across the 2024 and 2025 seasons, and seemed to barely be in the conversation for last year’s Ryder Cup.
Remarkably, Clark’s next top 10 in a major after his victory in 2023 came at last year’s Open Championship.
It has been an incredibly long journey back to the top for Clark. And you would imagine that he would use that slump as motivation to ensure that he never feels that the job is done again.
