Record-breaking world champion Sven Ottke, 58, has been hospitalised after a road traffic collision on his bicycle on this week.
It’s been reported by German newspaper Bild that the 58-year-old German was involved in a road traffic collision with a female driver while riding his bicycle in Mallorca.
Ottke is said to have suffered a double tibia fracture and shoulder injury. He underwent surgery on his shin on Tuesday, July 15th, 2025.
Ottke was with his former coach, Ulli Wegner, in a holiday club in Mallorca.
Wegner provided an update to Bild on his friend’s condition, “Sven Ottke is doing well under the circumstances. I will visit him in the clinic on Wednesday. He was simply run over.”
Sven and Ulli have always enjoyed a close relationship after working together for so long. Ottke gave his coach a convertible car after his last boxing fight and regularly visits him in Berlin.
Wegner added, “I always dreamed of a two-seater [sports car] and Sven made it possible for me. I’ll never forget that. Now I wish my former protege a speedy recovery.”
Born June 3, 1967, Sven Ottke is a German former professional boxer who competed from 1997 to 2004.
Despite starting boxing late, he not only achieved an incredible amateur career winning 256 from 308 fights, but he also took part in three Olympic Games in 1988, 1992 and 1996.
As a pro, he became a unified super-middleweight world champion, having held the IBF title from 1998 to 2004, and the WBA belt from 2003 to 2004.
With an incredible 21 successful title defences, Ottke was the fourth European boxer to retire as an undefeated world champion, after Jack McAuliffe, Terry Marsh, and Michael Loewe; and Joe Calzaghe later became the fifth.
Ottke defended the title against 20 boxers, a record in the super-middleweight division shared with Joe Calzaghe.
