Few players in modern football have defined a position quite like Sergio Busquets.
At Barcelona, he became the heartbeat of one of the greatest teams in history, forming an iconic midfield trio alongside Xavi and Andrés Iniesta.

Across nearly two decades at the club, Busquets set a benchmark that remains unmatched.
But his journey to the top was far from straightforward, as before breaking through at Barcelona, Busquets faced rejection, and one of the most surprising came from Villarreal.
That lesser-known chapter has now been revisited by Juan Carlos Garrido, a former Villarreal coach.
What’s the story?
Speaking about Busquets’ early years, Garrido revealed that the midfielder once had a trial with Villarreal as a teenager, a trial that ultimately did not go as expected.
“Busquets went for a trial at Villarreal when he was 14 or 15, and I wasn’t there at the time because I was coaching the reserve team, but those in charge of the trial said he was a ball-hog.
“He wasn’t a one- or two-touch central midfielder, but rather a tall attacking midfielder, and the thing is, with the way football evolves, you never know. Anything can happen.
“You can’t rule anything out, whether it’s a low-key player or a star prospect.

“You can’t say ‘this player definitely won’t make it’, because he probably will. That’s the nature of youth football,” explained Garrido.
Simply put, the reason why Villarreal rejected him is that they thought he was a “ball-hog”.
At the time, Busquets was judged through a very different lens. His style did not fit the expectations of a traditional midfielder, and that ultimately worked against him.
Ironically, those very traits would later become his greatest strengths.
Environment to flourish
Barcelona offered him the environment to evolve. Within the club’s system, he refined his game, learning to play quicker, smarter, and more efficiently.

Over time, he transformed into the perfect pivot, a player who dictated play without needing to dominate the ball in obvious ways.
What Villarreal once saw as a weakness became a defining quality.
Busquets went on to become the silent orchestrator of a golden era, playing a crucial role in Barcelona’s dominance both domestically and in Europe.
