EVANSVILLE — This has the makings of another competitive Romain Cadillac Men’s City Tournament.

Following the opening round at Fendrich, there are 31 players under par. Wade Worthington is the overnight leader at 7-under 63 following a blistering final nine holes. But a strong contingent, including several former winners, is right behind him.

Worthington produced the best opening round courtesy of a highlight finish. The Central High school graduate had four birdies and an eagle to shoot a 6-under 29 on the front. Worthington eagled the par-five, seventh — immediately after his group was put on the clock — and nearly did it again on the par-four, ninth after driving the green pin high.

“I’ve been playing this golf tournament for about 10 years,” Worthington said. “It’s always had my number. This year I’ve focused on decision making and hitting it in the right spots. Just making better decisions and put yourself in the best position possible to make par and birdie.”

Caleb Wassmer set the pace early with a 6-under 64 in the morning wave. The North Posey graduate had seven birdies to offset a lone bogey. He was matched in the afternoon by Mark Wehner, who also recorded seven birdies. Both were impressive considering the firmness of the course and consistent wind throughout the day.

“I historically play better if it’s windy,” Wehner said. “It helps me focus. You really have to be precise with each shot. I wasn’t going to swing until I felt comfortable with what I was doing. The first weekend, you just want to make the cut. A lot of good golfers (in the field) and a lot of golf left.”

What this opening round lacked in a crazy-low number, it made up for with depth. There are several big hitters lurking as the tournament moves to Helfrich on Sunday. Defending City champion Peyton Blackard and Cameron Weyer (a 29 on the back nine) are two shots behind at 5-under. Cade Schiff, Trevor Wagner, Kaden Gengelbach, Luke Johnston, two-time champion Logan Osborne and Daymian Rij are one behind them at 4-under.

Three-time City champion David Mills headlines a group at 3-under. The top-40 and ties advance to the second weekend — this cut stands at even par following the opening round, but tournament rules also state any player within 10 shots of the lead advances.
