The Eagles are bringing back former starting safety Marcus Epps, according to an NFL Network report.
After signing a one-year deal with the Patriots this offseason, Epps was released on Tuesday at final cuts. According to The Boston Herald, Epps requested his release and the Patriots granted it.
The Eagles by Wednesday afternoon were down to just three safeties after waiving Tristin McCollum to create a roster spot. The only safeties on the roster were Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown and rookie Drew Mukuba, who didn’t practice on Wednesday with a hamstring injury.
So, at the very least, Epps will offer the Eagles some depth at the safety position.
Epps, 29, played for the Eagles from 2019-22, appearing in 54 games with 25 starts. In the 2022 Super Bowl season, Epps started all 17 games in the regular season and all three in the playoffs, including Super Bowl LVII.
Epps was initially drafted in the sixth round by the Vikings out of Wyoming back in the 2019 draft. When he was released that November, he was claimed by the Eagles and was with them through the Super Bowl in 2022.
After the Eagles lost Super Bowl LVII to the Chiefs, Epps signed a two-year contract with the Raiders. He started all 17 games in 2023 but tore his ACL early in the 2024 season and played just three games. Epps signed with the Patriots in March but was released this week.
The Eagles will obviously start Reed Blankenship at one of their safety spots. The other position has been a competition between Brown and Mukuba. The addition of Epps will give the Eagles some much-needed depth at that spot. At 29 years old, Epps is now the oldest member of the Eagles’ secondary.
