Davis Thompson’s wild Saturday at Wyndham includes broken driver, albatross

GREENSBORO, NC — Davis Thompson vaulted up the Wyndham Championship leaderboard Saturday with a 5-under 65 and put himself just outside the FedEx Playoff bubble.

But it was an albatross on the fifth hole and a broken driver on the 14th that defined his moving day at Sedgefield Country Club.

After four pars to open his round, Thompson hit an 8-iron 186-yards into the par-5 fifth that rolled onto the back of the green, took an adventurous ride on the Donald Ross green and found the cup for a 2.

“Kind of got off to a slow start and then, you know, making an albatross usually helps get things going,” Thompson said.

It was the second double eagle of Thompson’s career, he claims, the other coming on the 16th at Bay Hill during a Palmer Cup event while at the University of Georgia. He has never recorded a hole-in-one on the PGA Tour, but said he wouldn’t trade one for an albatross.

“Holes-in-one are more exciting, but at the end of the day 3 under’s better than 2 under so I’ll take the albatross any day of the week,” Thompson said. “Yeah, I’ve had two pretty good ones.”

He birdied holes 8 through 10 before a bogey at 13, and his round could have been derailed shortly after when he cracked his driver on his drive at 14.

Rules officials judged that his club was eligible to be replaced since it wasn’t broken by an obscene act.

The new club was only used on the 18th, when his ball caught a tree and bounced back into the fairway. He finished his third round with five straight pars.

He went to the range following his round to get some more work with it before Sunday’s final round.

“One swing with it,” he said of the new driver. “I don’t know, but I got a good break so maybe that’s something.”

It was good enough to move him into 73rd in the FedEx playoffs, just outside the top 70 that will reach Memphis next week.

Thompson has been on the bubble nearly every year of his career. In 2025, a three-putt on the 18th left him at 71st in the standings. In 2025 he was 72nd at the end of the regular season and in 2023 he was 73rd.

“Yeah, it sucks. And this year, like I’ve played not great all year but these last three weeks I’ve given myself a chance,” Thompson said. “So, I’m really proud of that fact, made it this far. Really just want to put an exclamation point and either play my way into the Playoffs or win this tournament.”
