You still have plenty of time to buy a Giulia or a Stelvio in the United States. Although the gas models are dying in Europe, leaving only the diesel engine, Alfa Romeo tells Motor1 the two cars are not leaving North America anytime soon. The Italian duo will remain on sale until the end of next year. In an e-mail, Ron Kiino, Senior Manager of Product Communications, declared:

“In North America, the 2.0L gas powertrain for Stelvio and Giulia will continue to be available through the 2026 calendar year. Start of production for North America’s next-generation Stelvio will launch in the 2026 calendar year and the next-generation Giulia will follow. Based on the STLA Large multi-energy platform, both models will be available with electric and hybrid propulsion systems.”

The more potent Quadrifoglio models with the twin-turbo, 2.9-liter V-6, Ferrari-derived engine were discontinued in North America last year. 2024 wasn’t exactly great for the two cars in terms of sales in the US. Deliveries of the Giulia fell by a third to 2,320 units, while demand for the Stelvio decreased by 41 percent to 3,162 SUVs.

The first generation of the modern Giulia and Stelvio are among the few models underpinned by the Giorgio platform developed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. FCA spent a billion dollars to engineer the architecture, which has been modified to underpin Maserati’s Grecale and GranTurismo/GranCabrio models and Jeep’s Grand Cherokee/Grand Cherokee L. With the upcoming Alfa Romeo models transitioning to the STLA Large, the future looks uncertain for the Giorgio.

Considering the current Giulia and Stelvio are sticking around until the end of 2026, the cars will have unusually long life cycles of 11 and 10 years, respectively. Although the sedan is a year older, Alfa Romeo is renewing the SUV first. Teased today in official images of a camouflaged prototype, the next Stelvio is set to break cover later this year. However, sales won’t commence until 2026.

The revamped Giulia is also coming next year, but it won’t be a sedan anymore. Alfa Romeo intends to change the car’s shape, according to newly appointed CEO Santo Ficili. Reports indicate it’ll morph into a high-riding liftback. Think Citroën C5 X, Peugeot 408, and DS N°8. However, it won’t be mechanically related to any of them.

It’ll be bigger than those three cars and the current Giulia, considering that STLA Large is tailored to vehicles with a length varying from 187.6 to 201.8 inches (4764 to 5126 millimeters). Today’s model is 182.6 inches (4639 millimeters) long. Alfa’s spokesperson confirmed that hybrid and electric powertrains are planned, a striking departure from the gas-only sedan.

Weight is a concern. The heaviest Giulia tips the scales at 3,822 pounds (1,734 kilograms) for the soon-to-be-defunct-Quadrifoglio model. The increase in size and the adoption of electrification will undoubtedly add weight. To get an idea, the STLA Large-based electric Dodge Charger weighs 5,698 pounds (2,584 kilograms). Of course, the six-cylinder Sixpack with the twin-turbo, 3.0-liter Hurricane will be much lighter than its EV counterpart.

Although the Giulia will undergo dramatic changes, we’re glad Alfa Romeo is investing in a new generation instead of succumbing to an SUV-only lineup.
