Last week, the USGA announced that Southern Hills Country Club, the famed Perry Maxwell design in Tulsa, Okla., was awarded the 2036 U.S. Mid-Amateur, 2039 U.S. Girls’ Junior and 2044 U.S. Amateur Championships, marking the 11th, 12th and 13th USGA championships that will be contested at the historic venue.

Southern Hills’ championship lineage extends well beyond its marquee majors. The club has also staged a rich lineup of USGA events, beginning with the 1953 U.S. Junior Amateur won by Rex Baxter Jr. That was followed by Dexter Daniels’ victory in the 1961 U.S. Senior Amateur and Bob Murphy’s triumph at the 1965 U.S. Amateur. It later hosted the inaugural U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur in 1987, where Cindy Scholefield claimed the title, and the 2009 U.S. Amateur, won by Byeong Hun An — who, at the time, became the youngest champion in the event’s history.

More: Here’s how Southern Hills has changed ahead of 2022 PGA Championship

For more than a decade, the USGA has hosted 14 major championships each year, and Southern Hills has either hosted (or is slated to host) 13 of them. The only event that is has yet to welcome or that is is not scheduled to host is the U.S. Women’s Open. (Note: The U.S. Adaptive Open has been held for four years, starting in 2022.)

“Southern Hills has a long history as host of golf’s biggest championships, and we’re pleased to be returning to this storied venue in the decades to come,” said Mark Hill, the USGA’s managing director of championships, in a release. “Our relationship with Southern Hills spans more than 80 years, and the club’s dedication to excellence gives us every reason to extend it further. We know they will once again create an outstanding experience for players, fans and the Tulsa community.”

Southern Hills has evolved with the eras, reshaped by some of the game’s most influential architects. Robert Trent Jones and Keith Foster each left their imprint over the decades, but it was the 2019 restoration by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner that most deliberately turned back the clock, peeling away layers of modernization to reveal A.W. Tillinghast disciple Maxwell’s original vision.

“This expanded partnership with the USGA is a point of tremendous pride for our club,” said Tim McFerrin, Southern Hills Club president. “These championships speak to our club’s reverence for the game’s traditions and our enduring commitment to competitive golf at every level.”
