The trial of the most famous mixed martial artist in history, Conor ‘Notorious’ McGregor, got underway on Tuesday in Dublin, Ireland.

McGregor is being sued in civil court by Nikita Ni Lamhain, aka Nikita Hand, who has alleged since 2018 that the former UFC champion and another man took advantage of her while intoxicated in a Dublin hotel room.

The trial began with the testimony of Dr. Daniel Kane, an ER gynecologist who performed the examination on her in 2018. He testified that Lamhain was bruised and crying after the encounter. She had bruising on her neck from being choked and a laceration on her chest from her watch, caused when her arm was forcibly moved.

Nikita is seeking damages ranging from $1.79-$2.13 million for lost wages, change of homes, and medical expenses. The criminal courts declined to pursue charges against the MMA star, a decision which caused some consternation due to the apparent evidence and history of McGregor being accused of similar crimes.

Aside from the infamous incident like the one when McGregor punched an old man in a bar, or when he attacked a bus with a dolly and hurt several UFC colleagues, Conor has also been accused of sexual assault in 2020 on the island of Corsica, in 2022 on a yacht in Ibiza, and just last year in 2023 when he was accused of raping a woman in a bathroom at an NBA game

Today (Wednesday, November 6th) the trial resumes, with Paul Healy of the Irish Mirror reporting on location.

There seems to be no contention that McGregor and Hand had a sexual encounter, nor that she was assaulted. The question is just whether the fighter was the perpetrator. His co-defendant, James Lawrence, also told the gardaí in Dublin he had sex with Nikita, which she was not aware of initially. She only remembered that he comforted her on the night of the assault.

Nikita has never denied her use of drugs and alcohol on the night in question, admitting she used cocaine and alcohol along with McGregor and some friends. Her memory is spotty later in the night, but she claims to remember the assault in vivid and traumatizing detail.

The trial is expected to last about two weeks. A recap of the full trial can be found here.
