Sports fans around the world are still shocked and confused over the death of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch.

Busch passed away last Thursday at the age of 41. According to The Associated Press, he was found unresponsive while in the Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, North Carolina. His family revealed that he died from severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis.

“Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR’s highest level and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series,” NASCAR said. “His sharp wit and competitive spirit sparked a deep emotional connection with race fans of every age, creating the proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation.’ Our thoughts are with Samantha, Brexton and Lennix, Kyle and Samantha’s parents, Kurt and all of Kyle’s family, Richard and Judy Childress, everyone at Richard Childress Racing, his teammates, friends and fans. NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon. During this incredibly difficult time, we ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Further updates will be shared as appropriate.”

Robotic surgeon Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt provided a breakdown on sepsis and the common misconceptions about it in an article for CNN. This in-depth piece pointed out how sepsis is “more common and more unpredictable than people realize.”

“Pneumonia isn’t the only infection that can lead to sepsis. A skin infection that keeps spreading and raises your heart rate. A urinary tract infection that suddenly lowers your blood pressure. An infected kidney stone that raises your temperature – these are not just infections anymore. They could be sepsis,” Dr. Brahmbhatt wrote. “Busch’s death has put the spotlight on pneumonia, but it is only one possible cause of sepsis.”

NASCAR stars honor Kyle Busch.

After winning the Coca-Cola 600 this past weekend, Daniel Suarez shared some kind words about Busch.

“Just a week ago I was hanging out with Kyle and he seemed perfectly fine, and right now he’s not here with us anymore. It’s very surreal how things were happening,” Suarez told People Magazine. “Obviously, he was very loved and very respected by the entire NASCAR community. And a lot of people didn’t know this about Kyle, but he was just such a good person and somebody that really loved to help.”

Cup Series driver Chase Elliott, meanwhile, suggested Busch should win the Most Popular Driver Award this year.

“I would be in extreme favor of Kyle winning the vote. I think that he’s a guy that certainly poured a lot of his life into this sport. Although he might’ve been getting boos a lot of weeks, he also had a lot of fans, and a lot of really passionate fans,” Elliott said. “I really haven’t processed all of that, I guess, to get to that point. But I would certainly be in favor of him winning and whatever it took. Yeah, I think it would be really deserving for him to have that honor.”

Our thoughts remain with the Busch family during this difficult time.
