Collin Morikawa posted a stunning final-round 61 at the Travelers Championship on Sunday.

Morikawa began his final round at the Travelers nine adrift of the leader, Viktor Hovland, and eight adrift of Scottie Scheffler.

However, by the time the final round was over, the 29-year-old from Los Angeles missed out on a playoff by just one stroke.

Collin Morikawa played pretty much flawless golf on Sunday at the Travelers Championship, and his round of 61 could have been even better had he been a bit luckier with some of his putts.

Morikawa actually admitted at the Travelers that Scheffler is on another level to him and every other professional golfer.

But it was Morikawa who showed Scheffler how things are done during the final round at TPC River Highlands.

After walking off the final green on Sunday, Morikawa was visibly delighted with his performance on Sunday in Cromwell, Connecticut.

It was the best round he has played since his win at Pebble Beach in February.

He suffered a back injury in March but it seems fair to say that he is finally comfortable again when standing over the ball.

Morikawa responded when asked what his mindset was before teeing off on Sunday at TPC River Highlands.

Just have a good round, he admitted.

This was my third week in a row. The thought of actually having a chance, waiting it out, didn’t really cross my mind.

But I told my wife earlier this morning that, you know, let’s shoot 61 and end the three-week stretch on a good note and sometimes the way you manifest things works out.

Morikawa was desperately unlucky to miss his birdie putt on 17. However, he surely won’t be too disappointed on the whole.

And it won’t be long before he returns to the winner’s circle on the PGA Tour.

The two-time major champion was asked by one reporter how he felt after he rolled in his eight-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole.

I mean, I was really happy, Morikawa responded.

The goal — I told my wife this morning the goal was to shoot 61 today. And you never know how things are going to go, but I think starting, when you’re that far behind, you just want to play a good final round.

We’ve given ourselves a chance and all we can do is wait.

But at the end of the day it’s like, now it’s, like, I want it to happen. I want to be able to have a chance to hopefully win this tournament.

So we’ll see how the guys finish out, but pleased with kind of how everything played out today.
