Why James Madison can cover

With Curt Cignetti leaving for Indiana this offseason, former Holy Cross head coach Bob Chesney has led the Dukes to a 4-1 start with a huge win at North Carolina where they laid 70 points on the Tar Heels. James Madison lost its first game of the season last week against Louisiana-Monroe but actually outgained the Warhawks 399-257.

Last season, the Dukes were favored by four over the Chanticleers and won 56-14. They were also 15.5-point favorites at home in 2022 before winning 47-7. Quarterback Alonza Barnett III has accounted for 16 total touchdowns (12 passing and four rushing) on the season with only one interception and his playmaking ability will be a major factor on Thursday night. See who to back at SportsLine.

Why Coastal Carolina can cover

Coastal Carolina quarterback Ethan Vasko is coming off the best performance of his career. Also a redshirt sophomore, Vasko threw for 367 yards and three TDs in the win against Old Dominion. Senior running back Braydon Bennett is third on the Chanticleers in rushing with 145 yards but leads the team with five touchdown runs after recording two — in addition to a TD reception — versus the Monarchs.

Coastal Carolina also is dangerous on the other side of the ball, as its defense has scored four touchdowns of its own already this season. Linebacker Shane Bruce leads the team in tackles (39) and is tied for the team lead in tackles for loss (3.0). He’ll be at the forefront of slowing down the dynamic duo of Barnett and Pettaway. See who to back at SportsLine.
