Charlie Woods’ debut at the Junior PGA Championships drew significant crowds to Purdue University’s Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex on July 29 in West Lafayette, Indiana
Woods, a rising junior at the Benjamin School and son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, shot 70 (1-under) in the first round of the 49th Junior PGA Championships. He entered the clubhouse tied for 42nd and four shots back of the lead.
The Junior PGA Championships are comprised of two 72-hole stroke play tournaments for boys and girls junior amateur golfers. This year’s boys and girls tournaments will each feature 156 golfers, respectively.
The tournament will cut to the top 60 plus ties after Wednesday’s second round. It will cut down to the top 30 plus ties after the third round on Thursday.
More than 200 fans braved high temperatures and humidity to follow Woods’ first round on July 29 according to Ethan Hanson of Lafayette’s Journal & Courier.
Hanson spoke to one member of the crowd, Joe Cough of West Lafayette, about the “commotion” surrounding Woods’ round.
“Tiger was the reason why I played golf and it’s a cool experience to see everything and see Charlie play,” Couch said. “It’s surreal watching Charlie play at a course I play at every day.
“There’s a couple of shots I think he’d want back but I also feel like he’s playing well. He’s handling his emotions and there was a lot of commotion but I thought he was playing well.”
