A new unmarked Titleist GTS fairway wood is out on tour and in the bag of Charley Hoffman this week in Texas

Prototyping and testing never really stops in the world of golf club design, and even with the release of the GTS drivers and fairway woods, which include the GTS2, 3, and 4 drivers along with the GTS2 and 3 fairway woods, the folks over at Titleist still have something up their sleeve with the GTS line.

This week at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Charley Hoffman arrived with an unmarked, or at least undesignated, GTS 3-wood in the bag, the same model we spotted on the USGA conforming list the week of the PGA Tour launch.

What makes this particular club interesting is that, unlike the GTS2 and GTS3 fairway woods, which originally hit tour and are also now available for fittings, this GTS fairway doesn’t have dual adjustable weights and instead has one central weight closer to the face.

On top of that, the visual technology story explains a lot simply based on the contrast of colors on the sole which if Titleist is using the same themes tells us that this club features a lot of mass low and forward in the head (plus the adjustable weight). And, as the below picture shows, the sole is very flat towards the rear of the club with (what appears to be) a sharper angle to the trailing edge.

This once again signals that mass is being pushed low to help generate lower spin performance.
What Could It be?
If my speculation is right based on the visual technology cues, this new undefined GTS is actually some sort of lower spin prototype 3-wood meant to bridge the gap between the GTS2 13.5 and the GTS 300 mini driver which is currently going through the tour validation process – think of it like a GTS4 fairway wood for those who need to lower spin.
The only question is now, if Titleist is going to go through it’s normal cadence and introduce some more niche models into the GTS line, where does this unmarked GTS really fit in and when might we see it?
