Carl Edwards Shares Kyle Busch Comment and Why He’s Jealous of Denny Hamlin originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Denny Hamlin won his third race of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season on Sunday in Michigan. It wasn’t a race where he dominated.

In fact, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver didn’t lead the race until four laps to go when he passed William Byron, who had led a race-high 98 laps up to that point. The 44-year-old driver, who has been on baby watch all week, led the final laps around the two-mile circuit, including the most important one.

After his 57th career Cup win, the driver antagonized the Michigan crowd by doing an Ohio State symbol and what he said in his post-race interview remarks.

“Obviously he was doing a great job defending,” Hamlin said of trying to get around Byron, before pausing. “Daddy, I’m sorry, but I beat your favorite driver, folks.” The driver repeated the comment he initially said to fans after winning at Bristol in 2023 —  a comment he later acknowledged his father didn’t like. The three-time Daytona 500 champion said on his podcast that he’d refrain from doing it in the future.

Hamlin has been candid in the past about embracing the villainous role, which was once the domain of his former JGR teammate Kyle Busch.

Later during the Prime broadcast, Carl Edwards recapped the race with Danielle Trotta and Corey LaJoie and shared what the two-time Cup Series champion had said to him minutes earlier.

“First thing, Kyle Busch walked by, he goes, ‘Man, it’s so fun when you can win and mess with the crowd,” Edwards said. “I mean, he is jealous of him.”

To add insult to injury, with Hamlin’s trip to Victory Lane, he surpassed Busch for most all-time wins at JGR with 57.
