Fabio Capello has delivered a scathing verdict on AC Milan’s performance in their 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari, describing the display as “shocking”, “sad” and “humiliating” as the Rossoneri confirmed their failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Writing in Gazzetta dello Sport, via MilanNews.it, the former Milan coach did not hold back in his assessment of a capitulation he compared directly to Juventus’s own collapse against Fiorentina the previous weekend.

“Both have committed suicide,” Capello said. “The news of the final day is certainly the exclusion of Milan and Juventus from next season’s Champions League. Juventus made a mess at home against Fiorentina a week ago and Milan copied them last night.”

Capello labels Milan collapse as ‘humiliating for fans’ as calls grow for Allegri exit

The harshest words were reserved for the attitude and application of Allegri’s squad on the night.

“I saw a team without strength, without will, without ideas,” Capello said.

“As it has been for much of the second half of the season. And against Cagliari they were even lucky it finished only 2-1. The Milan players were watching their opponents play, is something like that even possible at this level, and in a match that was effectively a final?”

Capello was equally damning on the physical and mental state of the squad.

“Physically the team is extinguished, but they could at least have put in their soul, they could have fought,” he said.

“Instead there was no pressing, no aggression, nothing at all. In the end, I find myself using just one adjective to describe the evening: sad.

“I will add another: humiliating. Yes, because it must have been humiliating for the fans who followed this team with passion all season to watch a spectacle like that. The result and the performance were shocking.”
