There’s a reason the Tennessee Titans selected Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Ward showed off his ability to extend plays — and his strong arm — on his first career touchdown pass in the NFL.

It was the type of play Titans fans hope to see a lot more over the next decade or so, as Ward threw the touchdown to fellow rookie Elic Ayomanor. Film watchers, however, were probably clenching their teeth as Ward let go of the ball.

While it wound up being a fantastic play, it’s probably not one Ward should attempt again. Throwing across your body to the complete opposite side of the field rarely works in the NFL. Ward does deserve credit for showing off a strong enough arm to make the pass.

To further illustrate that, Ward’s touchdown was the longest horizontal distance on a touchdown pass on the run since at least 2016.

But hey, when you’re the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, those are the types of plays you can get away with … until you can’t. Titans fans hope that proves to be the first of many touchdowns Ward throws over his career. Titans coaches hope that too, but they probably want the rest of them to be far less stressful the instant Ward releases the ball.
