An executive golf course in San Diego has closed for extensive sewer line work and some fear it may never reopen.
Tecolote Canyon Golf Course is a 3,161-yard, 18-hole layout designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and Sam Snead. It had been playing as a nine-hole course for some time, with everyone playing Nos. 1 through 5 and then 15 through 18. Golfers could then play them all again if they wanted to get 18 holes in.

The course is in a canyon due east inland from the Pacific Beach area and not far from downtown San Diego.
Tecolote Golf Course has closed for Tecolote Canyon Trunk Sewer Improvements.
On Wednesday, the City of San Diego posted an update that said: “Due to Phase 2 of construction and the expiration of the City’s lease with the course’s previous operator, all 18 holes are now closed. The driving range will remain open until Sunday, Feb. 15. Previously, work was only partially impacting course operations and it was open under a 9-hole layout. The construction impacts give the City the opportunity to revisit the management of this asset, improve operations, better align with market value and enhance long-term revenue and public benefit.”
The Times of San Diego reports that “Councilmember Jen Campbell, in addressing the closure, tried to assure the community and those who golf there that the site will continue to be used for the sport.”

“The golf course will remain a golf course and the city is in the process of preparing a Request for Proposals for a new lease after the completion of the ongoing infrastructure repairs,” Campbell said in a social-media post on Monday.
There is no announced date for when the golf course might reopen. The Times story also said the city is reviewing its leases with all eight of the golf courses it owns and leases to private and/or non-profit entities.
