Bubba Wallace Had One Unfortunate ‘Worry’ Before First Win In 3 Years originally appeared on The Spun.

Bubba Wallace had won two Cup Series races going into Sunday’s victory at the Brickyard 400. But many of his detractors would have you believe that he never really won any.

When Bubba secured his first checkered flag at Talladega, some argued it didn’t count because the race didn’t go the distance due to inclement weather. When he followed that up with a win in Kansas the following year, people said it was (incorrectly) in Kurt Busch’s car.

That criticism got to him the 23XI driver said. And when the rain caution came out this past weekend, he admits it was hard to no think about what people would say online.

“Damn. You know, I understood the reasoning [for the rain caution],” Wallace shared after the win. “It was big splashes the last time through 1 and 2, and it was, like, OK. Then he says it’s pouring by the time we get over there the next time. So it was like, OK, I understand.”

“I will say the first thing that came to my mind is, here we go again. If it rains and it ends, Lord have mercy, Twitter’s going to blow up,” he added. “I said that for a second, but then I was like, man, I really want to win this straight up. I want to go back racing. So I was content with it going on. I was bummed that we gave up that lead, but here we are.”

Bubba was able to push through two overtimes while stretching his fuel to collect one of NASCAR’s crown jewels in his first win in 100 races. Had he pitted for gas and tires he likely wouldn’t have made it to Victory Lane.

Wallace also secured his spot in the NASCAR playoffs with the win as he continues to build on the positive momentum he’s been putting together over the past couple of years.

NASCAR’s next race takes place at Iowa Speedway for the Iowa Corn 350 Powered By Ethanol before Cup Series drivers Go Bowling At The Glen in two weeks.

Wallace has accumulated 550 points on the season — just nine shy of Chris Buescher and RFK’s Ford team on the outside looking in of the top 10.
