Brycson DeChambeau will enter the final round of the 2026 Open Championship tied for fifth, four strokes behind leader Sam Burns. DeChambeau could have been closer, but he was called for a two-stroke penalty during the second round on Friday after he stomped on some tall grass in a way that was ultimately considered a rules violation.

DeChambeau supposedly considered pulling out of the tournament after the ruling but instead showed up and shot 1-under. Fittingly, he started his day by hitting his tee shot on the first hole into the fescue.

While he ended up making par on No. 1, he was not able to overcome a similar tee shot on 18 when his ball again ended up in the tall, trampled grass. That time he had to call over a rules official and made a show of it.

Sure, DeChambeau wanted to be sure he didn’t violate the same rule again, but he also wanted to show up the officials. He ended up dancing around and making bogey to finish the round a shot under par. Between the penalty and bad lies he definitely lost some shots the last few days. As much as he wants to complain about outside factors, he’s the one who keeps hitting it into the tall stuff. Who knows where he’d be on the leaderboard if he simply kept the ball on the fairway.
