The final major championship of the 2026 golf season is here at The Open Championship, and Riyal Birkdale is the host for the biggest links tournament of the season.

It’s been a bit of an odd 2026 in terms of major champions. Rory McIlroy held serve by defending his title at The Masters before Aaron Rai and Wyndham Clark made it two surprise winners at the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open.
That leaves a lot of the game’s best players, such as Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau majorless in 2026. However, Scheffler, Schauffele and Rahm have at least been competitive at the biggest events on the calendar. DeChambeau, on the other hand, is looking to avoid making it a clean sweep of missed cuts at the majors this season.

DeChambeau, who is now with LIV Golf and spends a lot of time creating content for his YouTube channel, has been struggling at the biggest events. Ahead of The Open, Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee took a dig at DeChambeau on Tuesday.
“Probably the biggest surprise of the year, Bryson DeChambeau,” Chamblee said. “It’s almost like he went from chasing Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to chasing Grant Horvat. It’s like he wants to outdo every YouTuber in the game of golf instead of outplay everybody in the game of golf.”

DeChambeau has won two tournaments and finished in the top three on the LIV tour five times this season, so his struggles at majors clearly aren’t a problem with his skill level. He has collected two major titles during his career, both at the U.S. Open in 2020 and 2024, so he knows how to get it done on the biggest stage.
Maybe DeChambeau’s struggles at major championships are just an unfortunate coincidence. He has always struggled to some degree at Augusta National and got eaten up by a pair of difficult courses at Aronimink and Shinnecock Hills. But in order to dispel the criticism that is flying at him from all directions right now, he must put on a good performance at The Open.
