Brexton Busch has returned to victory lane.

Nearly two months after the death of his father — two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch — 11-year-old Brexton won a dirt race at Port City Raceway in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Friday, July 17.

Racing in the Restrictor Micro division, a class of sprint car racing for 9-to-16-year-olds, Brexton started in 14th place before powering his way to the front and taking the checkered flag. Brexton also won the seventh heat for the Non-Wing Micro class and finished sixth in the feature race for that division.

In an Instagram post, Kyle’s widow and Brexton’s mother Samantha detailed her emotions about seeing her son in victory lane.

“This is his very first win since Kyle’s passing. There was a lot of emotions to say the very least,” Samantha wrote. “Beyond proud of him not just for winning but all that he’s navigating at young age, beyond shattered Kyle isn’t here to be part of this, beyond grateful for all the support and amazing people we have around us.”

Brexton later made a post in remembrance of his father:

Kyle Busch died on May 21 at the age of 41 due to hemorrhagic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation, complications arising from sepsis caused by presumed bacterial pneumonia, which he had been dealing with for “days to weeks,” according to his death certificate. Drivers have continued to honor and pay homage to him throughout this season.

Brexton has been racing since the age of 6. Last year, he won 48 competitions in multiple disciplines of racing, from Legends cars and bandoleros, to micros, bandits, late models and sprint cars. He’ll finish up his Legends season at the Charlotte Motor Speedway later this month.

In August, the historic Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina will host the first Kyle Busch Invitational — a night featuring races with Legends cars and Bandoleros. It’s unclear if Brexton will compete in those races.
