BMW produced its two-millionth fully electric vehicle in early May 2026: a BMW i5 M60 xDrive built at Plant Dingolfing. BMW had already passed one million all-electric vehicles by late 2023, so it took roughly two and a half years to add the second million.
The timing is tight with another major step. BMW Group Plant Munich starts series production of the new BMW i3 sedan on the Neue Klasse platform in August 2026, and the company plans to convert that site to build only Neue Klasse electric vehicles around 2027.

Neue Klasse Pushes BMW Past Two Million EVs
Jochen Goller, a member of BMW AG’s board of management, said producing two million battery-electric vehicles “underlines how BMW and Mini models are winning over customers worldwide.” Since the original i3 launched in late 2013, BMW has delivered more than 4.0 million electrified vehicles in total, counting plug-in hybrids alongside pure EVs.
BMW highlights the Neue Klasse iX3 as a key driver of that push, especially in Europe where the model sits at the heart of a core segment for the brand. The electric X3 gives BMW a volume EV in a space where it previously leaned on combustion and plug-in hybrid variants, and early demand has been strong in major European markets.

Europe Leads While China And The US Lag
Europe carried BMW’s electric growth in the first half of 2026, with battery-electric share reaching 28% of the brand’s regional sales. Quarterly BEV deliveries there jumped 38% to 81,445 units, roughly in line with the about 40% jump in EU-wide EV sales that Reuters tied to high fuel prices and cheaper models. More than one in four BMWs sold worldwide in the same period was electrified.
China tells a different story. BMW opened pre-sales for a long-wheelbase Neue Klasse iX3 built for the Chinese market, with first deliveries planned for November 2026 and broader volume ramping up in 2027. In the US, where BMW discontinued the iX SUV, electrified sales have softened even as overall BMW volume climbed, leaving the brand’s target of 50% EV sales by 2030 resting heavily on how fast Neue Klasse production ramps up in Spartanburg and San Luis Potosí over the next year.
Motor1’s Take: Neue Klasse has pushed BMW into mainstream EV volume, but the real question is whether the new platform can scale fast enough and cut costs. That matters most in markets where electrified demand is weakest, because competition and pricing will decide if BMW keeps its edge.
