AL East rivals Toronto (63-66) and New York (72-55) open a weekend series in the Bronx with the Blue Jays within 0.5 games of the final Wild Card spot and the Yankees within four games of the Rays in the AL East.
Since appearing as sellers at the Trade Deadline, the Jays have climbed back into the playoff chase winning seven of their last ten and most recently taking two of three from the first-place Rays earlier this week. Tampa losing two of three and the Yankees winning their last three has made the top of the AL East a race again.

Tonight is more than likely a bullpen game for the Jays but keeping the Yankees’ bats in check has not been a major issue for opposing pitchers. The primary challenge against New York has been getting runners to cross home plate against their elite pitching staff. At the top of their rotation is tonight’s starter and Cy Young favorite, Cam Schlittler (10-6, 2.19 ERA). To say Schlittler has been dominant is accurate. Over his last two starts, the righthander has allowed a combined seven hits and two runs while striking out 18 (12.1 innings). Due to the previously alluded to offensive malaise, the Yankees actually lost both those games.
Lets dive into tonight’s matchup and find a sweat or two.
