Billy Peel IV of Kensington, Maryland, shot a 1-under par 69 at Pine Valley Golf Club in Clementine, New Jersey, on Thursday during the first round of stroke-play qualifying in the 100th annual George Arthur Crump Memorial Tournament. 

He leads by one shot over Will Davenport of Boynton Beach, Florida, and Bobby Massa of Dallas who both shot even par. Walker Cup hero Stewart Hagestad of Hermosa Beach, California, opened in 74, two strokes better than his Walker Cup captain, Nathan Smith of Pittsburgh.

Michael McCoy, the reigning U.S. Senior Amateur champion, of Norwalk, Iowa, had three birdies and finished at 72 to lead the Senior Division. Alan Fadel of North Palm Beach, Florida, is two back at 74. Jamie Slonis, a past champion, is in third place at 75.

The Open division has 75 players competing for 48 spots in match play. Twenty-four senior players are contending for 16 spots. 

The Crump Cup is one of, if not the premier mid-amateur tournament in the United States. Pine Valley is ranked second in the latest Golfweek’s Best Classic Courses list.

The tradition of the public being allowed to attend the Crump Cup on the Sunday of competition week has been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic and the public will not be allowed to attend the final match of the Crump Memorial Tournament again this year.
