San Jose Sharks forward Walker Duehr will face the Calgary Flames, the team that put him on waivers, for the first time on Sunday.

Duehr, 27, was placed on NHL waivers on Jan. 26 by the Flames. San Jose was first on the waiver priority list and claimed the 6’2 winger.

In 16 games with Calgary, Duehr had one assist. Since joining San Jose, the winger has two goals in seven games in a fourth-line forward role.

Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky has liked the power forward’s game but is looking for more consistent play.

“I think with any young player, when you see development, you stack games together, and you impact the game in different ways,” Warsofsky explained. “Those are the things when we talk about developing players, is you’re not going to feel great for 82 games. Walker is not going to feel great for 25 and have a great 25 games. When you have an average game, how do you impact the game? Is it a big hit? Is it a blocked shot? Is it being really responsible defensively? A perfect example of that is Will Smith.”

Warsofsky references the Sharks rookie who had a tough start to the season but has recently found his game on the wing while playing on the second line.

Duehr had been rotating through the fourth line during San Jose Sharks practice this week, but Warsofsky confirmed the winger will be in the lineup.

The Sharks will need a strong forechecking game against a scrappy Calgary Flames team, and Duehr is the perfect style of player to implement a hard-nosed style.
