WIMBLEDON, LONDON — Ben Shelton faces his toughest test yet when he meets world No.1 Jannik Sinner for a spot in the Wimbledon semifinals.

The American will need to record his first top-10 win of the year against the Italian if he’s to deny Sinner a second semifinal appearance at SW19, having last reached that stage two years ago.

Much of the outcome of this match could depend on Sinner’s elbow injury. He had an MRI scan yesterday and only underwent a light practice session on hard courts.

Sinner was two sets down in his fourth-round match before opponent Grigor Dimitrov had to retire, and Shelton will be hoping that’s his get-out-of-jail-free card already used up this tournament.

Shelton has already seen off one Italian in Lorenzo Sonego in his last match but is up against the No.1 seed, who has beaten him five times and lost just once when the two have previously met.

Ben Shelton vs. Jannik Sinner live updates, highlights from Wimbledon 2025

2 p.m. BST: The big talking point of today’s match is going to be on Sinner’s elbow injury. Let’s bring you up to date.

The Australian Open and US Open champion fell awkwardly in the opening set of the match against Dimitrov and following the walkover win on Monday, the Italian had an MRI scan on his elbow.

He didn’t practice on grass yesterday but instead did a light session on hard courts. Ahead of his match today, he was spotted practicing on grass with a sleeve on his right arm.

“No news on the MRI just yet,” said Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill on ESPN last night. “He had it earlier today and he can’t take a day off, so he wanted to touch the ball. So Simone and myself just fed him a few balls out of the basket.

“It’s not a bad thing sometimes (to practise on hard court). The more you play on grass with the uneven bounces, the more your timing goes off. (Andre) Agassi used to do it all the time… We’ve done that for a couple of years, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary.”
