Hunters Run Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida, has hired architect Beau Welling to undertake an $18.4 million renovation of the club’s South Course. Work will begin in January 2026 and is slated to conclude in January 2027.
The private Hunters Run is home to three courses: the North, the South and the East. The East was recently renovated by Kipp Schulties Golf Designs. The soon-to-be-renovated South Course was designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge and was built in 1979, then renovated most recently in 2001 by Mark McCumber. Hunters Run is an expansive community stretched across 990 acres just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, offering a full slate of amenities with more than 1,600 residences.
“Take the toll of time and year-round play and combine it with the dramatic rise in golf rounds, and our South Golf Course has served our golf community well over the last 24 years,” club president Richard Kapner said in a news release announcing the South renovation. “But the time has come to breathe new life into our signature course. We’re excited about our second course revitalization and being able to provide our members with another renewed playing experience.”
The release said Welling’s work will focus on the following:
- Improved course conditioning and consistency
- More flexible and strategically designed teeing areas
- Improved hole designs that encourage strategic play
- Greater playability and forgiveness for a broader range of golfers
- Modernized features that correct outdated or overly penal course elements
- Maintaining an established challenge for low-handicap players
Welling, who works with Tiger Woods on Woods’ course designs, has been plenty busy with his own firm in recent years. He designed the Omni PGA Frisco Fields Ranch West Course and master-planned that whole project in Texas, and he recently completed three other renovations in Georgia (Atlanta Country Club, Coose Country Club and Ocean Forest).
He also recently wrapped up a renovation at Oak Marsh at Omni Amelia Island Resort & Spa in Florida (where he also built a par-3 course), and he completed a renovation of the private Jonathan’s Landing Village Course, also in Florida. It was announced this week that Welling will renovate The King and Prince Golf Club in Georgia.
