Few Barcelona academy players have experienced a more memorable season than Xavi Espart did in the 2025/26 campaign.
The young defender not only fulfilled his lifelong dream of wearing Blaugrana by making his first-team debut, but also managed to establish himself as a trusted option for Hansi Flick.

By the end of the season, the 19-year-old had featured in six official games for Barcelona’s senior side, including one start.
One of the standout moments came in his debut appearance at St James’ Park. Thrown into the deep end, the academy graduate showed maturity beyond his age in a fleeting cameo.
A modern full-back in every sense

Espart’s rise has not gone unnoticed. A very modern full-back, the Spaniard is capable of playing in multiple positions.
His versatility is his biggest strength. Comfortable at right-back, defensive midfield and even in more advanced midfield roles, Espart offers the kind of flexibility that coaches value highly.

Xavi might have made the step up to the first team even earlier in the campaign, had it not been for a knee injury that disrupted his progress.
It is telling of his temperament that he returned to full fitness, made the jump to Flick’s first team and has not looked back since, with the German manager even comparing him to the legendary Phillip Lahm.
Bigger challenges ahead

Espart recently shared a video on his social media handle, reflecting on his breakthrough campaign, accompanied by a message that underlined his determination to keep improving.

“This season has been spectacular. I am very happy with everything I have experienced, with the work carried out and with all the shared experiences.
“Now it is time to keep fighting and giving my maximum to always defend these colours, to continue adding moments with the colours of my life,” he wrote.
That mentality is very important, as staying in the first team is perhaps even more difficult than breaking into it.
It also offers insight into what the future could hold for Espart. The Spaniard seems keen on staying, succeeding at Barcelona and playing under Flick.
With the Under-19 European Championship coming up and a crucial pre-season ahead, Espart’s next objective is clear.
Flick already knows what he can offer, and it is time for him to nail down his spot in the senior squad.
