Barcelona starlet suffers ankle injury while playing for reserve team; out for one month

A few select players from La Masia have been regulars in Barcelona’s first-team training this season while going down to the reserve team, Barça Atletic, to play and get minutes.

Jofre Torrents, Pedro Fernandez ‘Dro, Toni Fernandez, and Guille Fernandez belong to this group. The quartet have been in the first-team dynamics under Hansi Flick since the pre-season in July.

But, barring Jofre, none of them have received any minutes in the senior team since the season started. As a result, Hansi Flick allows them to play for Barça Atletic to get minutes and maintain rhythm.

Guille Fernandez injured

It was the case this weekend, when both Guille and Toni were made available for Barça Atletic’s game against Andratx. Jofre remained with the first team while Dro missed out due to a knock.

Now, though, SPORT reports that Guille has suffered an ankle injury during the game on Saturday and is set to be out for around a month.

The 17-year-old gem, who wears the No. 10 shirt for Barça Atletic, started in midfield but was taken off at half-time, much like Toni.

Toni’s substitution was previously agreed between Flick and Juliano Belletti, so that he could be a part of the first-team squad for the Valencia game on Sunday. But Guille was taken off due to an ankle problem he picked up vs Andratx.

This is undoubtedly very bad news for a player considered vital to the Barcelona reserve side. Guille had made a firm decision this summer to stay at the club despite receiving attractive offers to leave, with the aim of making inroads into the first team.

But now, the young midfielder will be sidelined for a month and the priority will be to ensure the ankle heals properly to prevent further problems in the future.
