The issues on the field last night, when Real Madrid took on Benfica in the first leg of their playoff, far trumped the mere sporting aspect of it.

After all, the game saw some ugly incidents that have sent the footballing world into shock.

Minutes after scoring Real Madrid’s only goal of the night, Vinicius Jr. was approached by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni, who covered his mouth and exchanged words.

Vinicius immediately reacted and refused to continue playing and even approached the referee, claiming that Prestianni had racially abused him on the field.

Barcelona legend supports Vinicius

It remains unknown as to what exactly was said, and it will probably never be known with transparency, but Barcelona legend Thierry Henry had Vinicius’ back in his post-game coverage.

“I don’t care (if Vini Jr.’s celebration was provocative). I want to know what Prestianni said,” he began, clarifying that there was no basis in any circumstance to bring a racist slur to the field.

Henry then lashed out at those questioning Vinicius’ celebration as an excuse to cover up the same.

“I refuse to discuss the celebration. I don’t even want to discuss it.”

Finally, he demanded to know what the Benfica player told Vinicius Jr. in his ear and why such inhumane acts continue to be advocated.

“Prestianni, what did you say? This is all we want to know.”

It remains to be seen how the matter escalates from this point, for racism on the field is a far bigger issue than it is from the stands.

At a time when UEFA and FIFA are working hard to eliminate the practice from the sport, it is shocking to see professionals engage in it so casually.

From a sporting perspective, Real Madrid are a goal up heading into the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu and will look to put the tie to bed early in the next game.
