Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo appears to be facing increasing competition for his place as a central defender, according to a recent report from AS.
It is said that despite recently renewing his contract until 2031, the Uruguayan defender is reportedly feeling the pressure from Eric Garcia, just as Inigo Martinez prepares to make his return from injury.
Hansi Flick’s tactical philosophy places great importance on building play from the back. This emphasis can sometimes pose challenges for Araujo, particularly in matches like the recent encounter with Alaves.
Although Araujo was substituted at half-time, Flick attributed the decision to the yellow card the defender had received. However, it seemed evident that Garcia was brought on to enhance the team’s ball distribution.
Problem for Araujo
While Araujo has made significant improvements since joining Barcelona, his ability to initiate attacks from the back remains a work in progress.
Opposing teams have been known to exploit this weakness by applying pressure, hoping for mistakes. Flick has recognised this pattern and appears ready to address it, though it may be a tough adjustment for the Uruguayan.
The return of Martinez will also intensify competition for defensive roles. Martinez had an impressive first half of the season before being sidelined by injury.
His strong performances make it probable that he will reclaim a starting position once fully fit. Meanwhile, Pau Cubarsí has become a key figure in the defence, and Garcia is taking full advantage of his opportunities on the pitch.
Araujo must step up
Araujo’s prolonged injury absence of nearly half a year may have hindered his adaptation to Flick’s tactical system, which demands high levels of concentration and defensive coordination.
Fortunately for Araujo, Barcelona will have a two-week period without midweek matches in February.
This break, particularly the eight days between fixtures against Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano, provides a valuable opportunity for the defender to focus on tactical training.
It will be a crucial time for him to regain his form and prove that he can be a dependable starter for Barcelona once again.
