World No. 1 Sabalenka has enjoyed a superb 2025 but fell short in both the Australian Open and French Open showpieces, losing to Madison Keys and Coco Gauff respectively.
Another American opponent, especially one set to be backed by the famously vocal Flushing Meadows crowd, might be the last thing Sabalenka wants to see on the other side of a slam final net. But it remains to be seen what scarring Anisimova has from her chastening experience at Wimbledon.
Iga Swiatek dealt out a brutal 6-0 6-0 defeat to Anisimova in her first major final 56 days ago. Anisimova’s straight-sets win in their quarterfinal rematch in New York could yet prove to be a pivotal moment in her career.
Anisimova beat Sabalenka in the Wimbledon semifinals 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in July.
A three-hour marathon against Naomi Osaka had to be navigated for Anisimova to reach the final, while Sabalenka also went the distance against Jessica Pegula in the semis.
