A new era of Arkansas basketball begins on Wednesday, Nov. 6 when John Calipari makes his coaching debut for the Hogs. The 2024-25 Arkansas basketball season tips off with a home game versus Lipscomb, and Calipari is expected to have immediate success after he led Kentucky to SEC regular season and conference championships, plus an Elite Eight appearance, in his first year with that program. The Razorbacks are coming off a 16-17 year, their first losing season since 2009-10, but they made at least the Sweet 16 the three previous seasons.
Essentially the entire 2024-25 Arkansas basketball depth chart has been reconfigured since 13 of the 15 players on the Arkansas basketball roster are newcomers. Fortunately, Calipari has a lengthy history with roster turnover in this current era of college basketball. The SEC media picked Arkansas to finish fourth in the conference after finishing outside the top eight the last two years. Arkansas basketball roster overview
Calipari attacked both the 2024-25 college basketball transfer portal and the recruiting trails to fill out the Razorbacks roster, landing seven players from the former and six incoming freshmen. The biggest returnee from last year’s roster is Trevon Brazile, who flirted with the NBA Draft but elected to come back to Fayetteville, Ark. He led the team with 5.9 rebounds in 2023-24, while finishing second in blocks (1.2) and fourth in points (8.6).
Amongst the transfers, Johnell Davis and D.J. Wagner carry the most cashet. Davis, formerly of FAU, was the AAC co-Player of the Year last season after ranking second in the conference with 18.2 points. He has just one year of eligibility remaining, while Wagner, who followed Calipari from Kentucky, has three more seasons left. He was the top-ranked combo guard in the Class of 2023 rankings, per 247Sports, and made SEC All-Freshman a year ago en route to averaging 9.9 points and 3.3 assists.
The incoming freshmen class is highlighted by a trio of four-star prospects. Combo guard Boogie Fland was named Mr. New York Basketball for his amateur exploits, which included averaging 19.3 points as a senior. Forward Karter Knox was a 2024 McDonald’s All-American and comes from a family of athletes as his brother played in the NBA, and his father played in the NFL. Then there’s Billy Richmond III, a top-10 ranked small forward, whose father, Billy Jr., played under Calipari at Memphis, so the coach has lots of talent to work with in his first year in Fayetteville.
