In July 2025, Amanda Anisimova was riding high.
The American women’s tennis player had made it to the finals of Wimbledon. It was her first major finals of her career that began in 2016. It was a bittersweet moment for the then 23-year-old as she made it to the finals, but had to take on Iga Swiatek, a dominant player who drew the eight-seed for the tournament.
Anisimova was at her highest of highs, but it came crashing down as Swiatek showed the gap between them, winning 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets. The American was on the biggest stage of her life, and she unfortunately lost in historically bad fashion.
Anisimova didn’t let it derail her career, though, and continued on, entering the tournament draw for the 2025 U.S. Open. As fate would have it, she matched up with Swiatek in the quarterfinals. Anisimova was already at a stage of the major further than she had ever been, but the rematch was not about reaching the semifinals. It was way more about proving that she could hang with the best women’s singles competitors on the big stage, and she did just that on Wednesday evening.

Here is more on Anisimova’s bounce-back win against Swiatek to reach the U.S. Open semifinals.
Amanda Anisimova beats Iga Swiatek
Anisimova didn’t let what happened at Wimbledon hang over her. Heading into the U.S. Open, she had won six of the eight matches she played. With the way the draw shaped out, her quarterfinal win over Beatriz Haddad Maia set up the rematch against Swiatek. In the U.S. Open draw, Anisimova was given the No. 8 seed, while Swiatek drew the No. 2 seed. Again, it looked like Anisimova was in over her head and was going to be a stepping stone for Swiatek, with the Wimbledon performance fresh in her mind, but Anisimova wasn’t rattled.
“Bouncing back from that actually was a little bit difficult, because that never happened to me before. [The Wimbledon final] wasn’t a good performance by any means. I feel like maybe I learned some things from it and some things I can do differently, but above all, I think it was just a learning experience.”
When she learned that her opponent was going to be Swiatek, Anisimova said, “I’m really excited and looking forward to it. At this stage of the game you’re going to play a really tough opponent regardless. So to be able to have a rematch or to be able to face her again and give myself another chance, I’m really, really happy about that. I feel like it’s going to be a really tough challenge, but I feel like I’ve been playing well. I’m just looking forward to it. I hope I can put on a good performance.”

“Playing here is so freaking special. I’ve been having the run of my life here. When I got here I was like ‘Ok let’s try and get through one round.’ This has been such a dream. To come back from Wimbledon like that is… pic.twitter.com/BGvpa3tETs

And put on a performance she did.
The first set was tied even at 2-2, but Anisimova was able to pull through and take the frame 6-4. She kept that momentum in the second set, winning it 6-3. Not only did she finally win a game against Swiatek, but she also won the match. A bounce-back performance like that is not something we typically see just a few months apart in the world of tennis. While Anisimova will now advance to the semifinals against the winner of No. 8 Naomi Osaka and No. 11 Karolina Muchova, she will have 24 hours to relish in the accomplishment of what she was able to overcome and pull off in the quarterfinals.
