Hogwarts Legacy allows players to delve into the Wizarding World and experience an original storyline within the iconic magical school of Hogwarts. The developers at Avalanche Software went out of their way to provide the surrounding landscape with plenty of flora and fauna that have distinct features.

Included in this magical world are different beasts that you can tame and befriend, with some offering ways to travel around the school and surrounding areas. Players will get their first taste of taming a wild beast in Professor Horwin’s “Beast” class, before you venture out to discover Puffskeins, Kneazles, and the crowd-favorite Hippogriff.

If you want to fill your bestiary with your favorite critters, here are all the animals you can tame in Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy: all tameable beasts

You’ll eventually find yourself completing “The Elf, The Nab-Sack, And The Loom” during your playthrough, where you’ll get your hands on a Nab-Sack. You’ll use this instrument to collect animals throughout your travels. Don’t stress, poachers are hunting all the animals already, so you can catch these furry friends without feeling guilty.

Here is a handy table detailing all 13 beasts you can tame in Hogwarts Legacy:

Diricawl

The Diricawl is a flightless bird that can be found throughout the world of Hogwarts Legacy. These birds closely resemble turkeys, chickens, and ducks, come in a variety of colors, and can shed Diricawl Feathers.

These feathers are crafting materials typically used in a variety of tier-two gear upgrades. If you don’t want to raise your own Diricawls, you can always purchase these feathers from Indiria Wolff.

Fwooper

The Fwooper is another multi-colored bird that can be captured in Hogwarts Legacy. Unlike the Diricawl these birds can fly, so we suggest using spells to freeze these creatures before you attempt to capture them.

Spells like Levioso or Glacius will apply CC to the birds, making them incredibly easy to catch with the Nab-Sack. These birds also drop Fwooper Feathers, which can be used to craft several upgrades for your gear.

Giant Purple Toad

Giant Purple Toads are exactly that, giant toads colored in various shades of purple. These animals are fairly easy to capture and raise because there are five Dens located just above Hogwarts itself.

If you happen to capture these massive toads, then you’ll earn Toad Warts while caring for these creatures. Like all other creature items, these can be used to upgrade your gear with various traits.

Graphorn

Before you can tame a Graphorn, you’ll have to complete San Bakar’s trial. This mission is part of the main storyline, and unlocks the ability to tame these daunting beasts.

Graphorns are one of the few animals that can be ridden as mounts, and these ferocious creatures have a powerful charge attack that can ram through barriers and enemies. Remember to watch your stamina while riding these creatures, as Graphorns get tired if they attack too frequently.

Once you complete the aforementioned quests, Graphorns will only spawn in the Den located in Clagmar Coast.

Hippogriff

The Hippogriff is one of the few beasts in the game that can only be tamed after completing a specific quest. While progressing through the storyline of Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll eventually have to complete a mission titled, ‘The High Keep’, where you’ll save some Hippogriffs.

After completing the questline you’ll have access to your very own Hippogriff, and can use the creature to fly around the map. These creatures have the hind end of the horse, but their front resembles a large eagle with massive wings.

Once you complete this quest, you’ll have access to various Hippogriff Dens scattered around the map. You can capture different colored Hippogriffs in these locations, which can be mounted.

Jobberknoll

Jobberknolls are yet another bird you can capture in Hogwarts Legacy, and they are also the smallest creatures in the entire game. These birds come in a variety of vibrant colors, and have mohawks made out of feathers.

Similar to Fwoopers, Jobberknolls fly around their dens very quickly. Prepare to use spells like Levioso or Arresto Momentum to stop these creatures in their tracks. If you happen to capture these elusive birds, then you can use Jobberknoll Feathers in various upgrade recipes.

Kneazle

Kneazles are massive cats with plump bodies and compact heads that are typically aggressive. However, if these felines take a liking to a specific witch or wizard, they can become loyal companions.

If you happen to tame some Kneazles, then you’ll be able to use their fur to craft some powerful tier-three upgrades for your gear.

Mooncalf

Unlike other creatures in Hogwarts Legacy, the Mooncalf will only appear during the night. These strange creatures have small bodies and long necks, topped off with tiny heads and two massive eyeballs.

If you are brave enough to stare back at these creatures, then you can capture them with the Nab-Sack and raise them to collect Mooncalf Fur. This fur is needed to craft specific upgrades and traits.

Niffler

Nifflers are some of the cutest creatures in the game, as they are inspired by both Platypuses and otters. These creatures come in a variety of colors, such as blue-green or a darker purple. There are also many dens scattered across the entire map, so capturing these critters is never too much of a challenge.

Once they are tamed, Nifflers drop fur that is used for crafting various traits.

Phoenix

The Phoenix is the rarest creature in the game and has some unique properties. Unlike all the other animals, you can only capture one Phoenix by completing the ‘Phoenix Rising’ questline.

This quest takes you into a Phoenix Mountain Cave, where you’ll battle high-level enemies and capture this elusive fiery bird. Since each player can only capture a single Phoenix, this is the only animal that you can’t breed.

Puffskein

Puffskeins are supremely adorable, so you’ll probably want to catch as many of these fuzzballs as possible. Since this is a common creature, there are a total of six different locations across the entire map where you can catch these balls of fur.

Puffskeins are the most common housepet among wizarding families, as they are incredibly easy to take care of. If you raise your own, you can collect Puffskein fur to craft upgrades for your gear on the Enchanted Loom. Puffskein Fur can only craft tier one, or the most basic, upgrades.

Thestral

Thestrals are magical horses without fur that have two large horns and leathery wings. These creatures are incredibly skittish and are difficult to capture, so it may take several tries until you can tame one.

Unfortunately, these beasts can only be mounted and flown around the map if you have purchased the Dark Arts pack, which also unlocks some unique dueling gear. You can still house these creatures in your Room of Requirement, to collect Thestral Hair for upgrades.

Unicorn

While capturing a Unicorn is quite the challenge, there is only one Den where these magical horses spawn. This Den is located within the Forbidden Forest, so stock up on potions and bring your Nab-Sack to pilfer one of these mythical creatures.

Once you have caught a Unicorn, you can collect Unicorn Hair to unlock some supremely powerful upgrades to your gear. Unfortunately, there is no way to mount or ride a unicorn around the map.

How to use Vivariams in Hogwarts Legacy

Once you have captured beasts in your Nab-Sack, you can deposit them within the various Vivariams inside the Room of Requirement. You’ll start with just a single Vivarium unlocked, but you can complete different quests to unlock more. Each Vivarium comes with a specific biome, but you can place any of the 13 beasts into a Vivarium regardless of its biome.

Here are the four quests you can complete to unlock new Vivariums:

  • ‘The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and the Loom’ – Forest Vivarium
  • ‘The High Keep’ – Coastal Vivarium
  • ‘The Plight of the House Elf’ – Swamp Vivarium
  • ‘Phoenix Rising’ – Mountain Vivarium

Each Vivarium can house a total of 12 animals at any given time, but there can only be four different species of animals inside a single Vivarium. That means you’ll have to unlock all four Vivariums if you want to house all the creatures within the game.

Animals within your Vivariums require extra care to produce beast materials. You’ll have to use spells to brush your animals and provide them with ample food. Thankfully, you can purchase autofeeders that will passively keep your animals fed. These beast feeders can be bought in Hogsmeade for 1,200 galleons from the Tomes and Scrolls shop.

Breeding beasts

If you have captured two beasts of the same species that are male and female, you can purchase and conjure a breeding pen to produce offspring. Once you conjure and interact with the pen within a Vivarium, you can place two animals into the area and wait 30 minutes in real time. Once the time is up, the two animals will automatically create a baby.

The breeding pen is purchased in Hogsmeade from the Tomes and Scrolls shop for 1,000 galleons. Keep in mind that it is impossible to breed the Phoenix, as you can only capture one. Furthermore, if the current Vivarium is full of other animals, no offspring will be created.

How to catch Shiny Beasts in Hogwarts Legacy

Every beast in Hogwarts Legacy, besides the Phoenix, has a shiny variation that changes the animal’s coloration. While these shiny beasts don’t have any practical differences, many players want to own a shiny variant of each animal.

Below is a table that showcases the colors of every Shiny Beast:

Thankfully, collecting Shiny Beasts isn’t too difficult once you own the Nab-Sack. To find a shiny beast, you’ll have to travel around the map and investigate all of the Beast Dens mentioned above. There is always a small chance that a Shiny Beast will spawn in any of these locations, so check each Den for your desired creature.

If there are no Shiny Beasts within the Den, we suggest using the Nab-Sack to capture all of the regular creatures. This will clear the Den, and you can use the wait function within the map to skip time and spawn new Beasts. You can continually repeat this process until a Shiny Beast spawns.
