The first round of the 2026 U.S. Open teed off Thursday morning at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. Players were greeted by challenging weather, with thick fog rolling across the course and a persistent light rain making conditions difficult. The weather quickly halted the competition, as officials suspended play.

With only 30 minutes of action before the weather intervened, just 14 competitors had completed a single hole before the suspension was announced. Players finished any hole they had started and then returned to the clubhouse, joining others as they waited for the fog and rain to dissipate. The weather delay not only affected the early starters but also forced organizers to reschedule tee times for every group throughout the day.
Given the minimal play before the suspension, the leaderboard remains wide open. After only two holes, eight players share the lead at even par, while the rest of the field awaits their chance to get underway.
