ESPN’s Adam Schefter had training camp notes for every NFL team on his podcast. In the NFC West portion, Schefter spoke about the hurdles Aaron Donald and the Los Angeles Rams still have to clear — Donald is still owed $40 million from his current deal.
According to Schefter, the 49ers still have “a lot of unresolved issues.” Here’s what he had to say:
We still need to see if Brandon Aiyuk is going to apply for reinstatement. George Kittle is coming back from injury. He feels like he’s going to be ready for that season opener in Australia against the Rams, but the 49ers may be very careful. And let’s see if he can make it back. I don’t think it’s a given just yet.
They have a new defensive coordinator in Raheem Morris, who will be the fifth different defensive coordinator in the last 5 years. Now, they love Raheem Morris. They’ve wanted him to do that job for a while. I think Kyle Shanahan is very happy to have him back there. But it’s another new defensive coordinator, as they try to work in some of their players coming back from knee injuries — like their former No.1 draft pick, Mykel Williams. A lot of players trying to bounce back.
They do have Mike Evans, and that’ll be a big boost for the offense.
For as active as Aiyuk has been on social media, he still must apply for reinstatement. A week ago, Schefter said he believed Aiyuk had scared teams off. He’s not getting traded anymore after his antics. Aiyuk won’t get the opportunity to play for another team until he files the paperwork to be reinstated. He’ll remain on the left squad list until that happens.

Kittle should take all the time he needs. As impressive as it is to see him deadlift 660 pounds, those deadlift/squatting movements don’t have as much impact on the Achilles as you’d think, as there is no directional change in an explosive manner happening.
Kittle said during OTAs he had a target date that would be 21 weeks out on June 23. Week 1 feels like a long shot. Speculating on Kittle’s return will drive you up a wall.
As for having stability at defensive coordinator, it’s the first time there’s a former defensive back in the fold. I’ll be interested to see how Morris impacts the play of the secondary, and if we see more changes throughout the season if the results don’t follow.
