New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is accompanying his teammates on a six-game West Coast road trip this week, fueling speculation he could be nearing a return to the active roster.
The three-time AL MVP hasn’t played in three months due to a stress fracture in his rib, but the possibility that he soon could take part in on-field activities would be a major step forward in the recovery process.

“I’m sure it will be ramped up and a lot more involved,” manager Aaron Boone said before Sunday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. “Hopefully out there, [he will] start to get on velocity and things like that. He’ll be part of the pregame stuff and just get more entrenched into getting ready to come back.”

Judge began hitting off a tee a couple weeks ago and has progressed to taking overhand batting practice in the indoor cage. He also has been working on light throwing and outfield drills.
He said last week he didn’t think he’d need a minor-league rehab assignment once he felt ready to get on the field again.
The Yankees haven’t publicly revealed a timeline for Judge’s return to action and aren’t expected to activate him during their current road trip, but their next homestand − beginning Sept. 8 against the Colorado Rockies − would be a logical target, barring any setbacks.
