A gold statue of President Donald Trump at the Trump National Doral Miami golf course is drawing attention after the start of the PGA Tour’s 2026 Cadillac Championship.

“It’s big and gold,” golfer Rickie Fowler told the Palm Beach Post, a part of the USA TODAY Network.

The statue, dubbed the “Don Colossus,” sits on the golf course that the president owns just outside of Miami. It depicts Trump with his right fist in the air, the president’s pose after an assassination attempt on him at a July 13, 2024, campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

The statue was installed about a week before the Cadillac Championship, which continues this weekend at Trump National Doral, culminating on Sunday, May 3.

There’s a backstory to the Trump statue – and, of course, people have thoughts about it. Here’s what to know.

What golfers are saying about ‘Don Colossus’

Gary Woodland, who lives in Delray Beach, Florida, said the statue reminds him of the trophy awarded to the winner of The Players Championship.

Tommy Fleetwood, a golfer from England, laughed when he was asked his thoughts on the statue.

“If I have my own resort one day, maybe I’ll put a big gold statue of me on it,” he said. “We’ll see.”

The backstory: Ohio sculptor released statue after payment dispute

The statue was created by Ohio sculptor Alan Cottrill and commissioned by the cryptocurrency group $PATRIOT.

However, the sculptor was in a payment dispute with $PATRIOT.

He had been paid $300,000 for the bronze and another $60,000 for gold leafing. The disagreement was over copyright infringement after the crypto group used the artwork’s likeness to sell crypto tokens, Cottrill told The Columbus Dispatch.

Cottrill held the statue in an undisclosed location in Ohio, refusing to release it until he received full payment. An agreement was reached about a week before the tournament, he said.
